Chiropractic vs Physiotherapy: What’s Right for You?
This is one of the most common questions we get. Our honest answer is that it is the wrong question.
At Strive we do not sort people by profession. We match you to the practitioner whose skillset fits your problem.
Why the profession is the wrong question
Both physiotherapists and chiropractors in Australia complete a university degree, are registered with AHPRA, and are trained to assess and treat musculoskeletal problems. Both use hands on treatment, exercise prescription, and load management.
The old distinction, that chiropractors adjust spines and physiotherapists prescribe exercise, does not hold up in a modern practice. Practitioners from both professions now work from the same evidence and use much the same toolkit.
What varies far more than the profession is the individual. Their experience, their areas of interest, the caseload they see every week, and the extra training they have done. Two chiropractors can be more different from each other than a chiropractor and a physiotherapist are.
Look at the skillset, not the letters
Someone who treats runners every day is the right person for your knee, whichever degree hangs on their wall. Someone who has done extra training in pelvic health is the right person for that, and you cannot guess it from the job title.
A good practitioner takes a proper history and examines you rather than treating to a template. They explain what they think is going on in language you understand. They give you something to do between appointments. And they have a plan with an endpoint rather than an indefinite schedule of visits.
If a practitioner cannot tell you what needs to change for you to stop needing them, that is worth questioning.
How we handle it at Strive
We have chiropractors and physiotherapists working side by side and we do not treat them as separate services. When you book, we are matching you to a person and a skillset, not to a profession.
If you see someone and a colleague is the better fit for your problem, we will tell you and move you across. That is a normal part of how we work, not a failure of the first appointment.
So which should I book
Whichever appointment suits your schedule. Tell us what is going on when you book and we will put you with the right person.
The goal is the same regardless of who you see. Work out what is driving the problem, reduce the symptoms enough for you to move, and build the capacity so it does not come back.
